Spring 2019 Spotted Lantern Fly Smash a Thon

This program is currently unavailable. Click here to view all of our current programs.

April 1st—June 30th
Introduction:
Spotted lantern flies are invasive plant hopping bugs  that are beginning to destroy lovely Chester County. They feed voraciously on many plants, including economically important crops like fruit, tress, grapevines, hops, hardwoods and ornamental trees. While they do not sting or bite, its time to  smash them!!!
What you can do:

  • Stop the spread of SLF by checking your car and any outdoor equipment.

  • Smash living spotted lanternflies on site. They are 1” long and pictured above.

  • Scrape egg masses with a plastic card or putty knife into a bag filled with hand sanitizer or isopropyl alcohol. Each egg mass contains 30-50 eggs.

  • Band trees with sticky tape or duct tape to trap nymphs (spring).

  • Remove the favored host (tree of heaven) and use a chemical control when appropriate.

Smash Campaign Rules:
The Township will be crowning a Smashing Champion! To enter, simply tally up your totals using the attached Smash Sheet and submit to Jason at jlang@eastgoshen.org
